Does anyone build and repair decks in addition to restoration? What kind do you build? (PT, exotic, composite?)

I've got a background in construction and I enjoy working with wood, so I will also build decks for my customers.

I repair & build decks in addition to restoration. I dont build that many, but most decks are still redwood, allthough I've done a few composites, but no takers for exotics. Will post some pics soon.

Hey Pat,
Repairs and rebuilds go hand in hand with restoration in my part of the south. Well over half of the decks/docks we deal with need some type of repair. I really can't justify cleaning and sealing without the repairs in most cases. Pine fluctuates in price, but many times it's a better investment to replace it rather than clean and seal it. Especially when the support structure is good and the job is not complex. We do it all, from replacing a few boards to tearing down and rebuilding from the ground up. I can't limit my business to only cleaning and sealing in my location.
One thing to check into is local regs on this type stuff. I can "pressure wash" and "paint" with no license outside city limits where most of my work is, but once I pick up a hammer I have to go see the MAN.
Hey if you get into ripping out old decking, spend the $65 and get a Deck Wrecker. It's like money in the bank. If it's screwed down watch out, hopefully the screw necks have rusted almost through. If you lay PT pine decking, get the BoWrench.
Here's a big can-O-worms: Lay PT pine cup down. If you're in full sun pull it tight, if not leave a gap. Lots of opinions there.

Here is a deck I built in Heart "B" Redwood. The Deckmaster Hidden Deck Fastening System was used for a clean more natural look. Sealed originally with Ready Seal light brown. This pic was taken after the second year. Cleaned, light sand & resealed with Ready Seal light brown.

Lyle,

Really nice design and workmanship. That is gorgeous redwood, as nice or even better looking than many hardwoods.
