TOPIC: A/C on Ipe

Re:A/C on Ipe 1 Month, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 0
The IPE deck boards used for the test were 9 months old and taken as samples from a deck under construction. The boards were kept in the shop and never exposed to the elements.

The reason for the longevity is the greatly increased amount of red transparent iron oxides in the formula.

This is a sample of test board exposed to the Arizona sun at 5500 feet elevation with a southern exposure. The test board is now in the eighth month with no perceptible color change (six months exposure in photograph). I will send additional photographs as the test continues.

How do I post a picture???
**complicated but think I got it...

Anyway, picture below is of the deck. I used what I like to call triple cedar rustic brown...a combination of leftover pails for 4 different colors (cedar semi, cedar tone, super cedar, rustic).

Picture below is after cleaning, you can see the sample color on the bottom left. Unfortunately we got a huge rainstorm the evening after staining...customer says there are blotches where stain seems to have washed or puddled up. I will check out tomorrow and see what happened

bigchaz,

I had a cumaru deck last year that I had a similar scenario with. Cumaru is similar to Ipe. I noticed the tree in your pic...This one had a huge water oak over part of it and it rained right at the 24 hr mark after applying AC cedar tone. It had dark blotches under the tree area where water sat and dried. All I could figure was that maybe tanin from the tree caused that.(?) That was just part of the problem I had on that job.

Chaz, I thought I saw in another photo you had a bunch of floor machines and your using the hand held in the above. There is no going back to hand held once you use a floor machine !!!! unless, its touch ups , boarders, stairs........ect

Jim, must have been another member, no standup machines yet. Bid a couple at an auction the other day but no luck snagging one yet. Handhelds aren't too bad...its not me bending down at least!

Diamond Jim,

I think it was Lyle Gottschalk of Ace Restorations that posted the photo of multiple sanders.

Charley,

Please give me a call concerning floor sanders.

Many thanks,
